Jaipur:
Hours after deciding to suspend its “Jan Aakrosh Yatra” in Rajasthan in light of the rising number of coronavirus cases globally, the Bharatiya Janata Party said it would go ahead with its plan to hold public meetings in parliamentary constituencies while following COVID-19 protocols.
BJP state chairman Satish Poonia said some confusion over the Jan Aakrosh Yatra has now been cleared and the Jan Aakrosh Sabhas (sessions) will be held as per the schedule.
Earlier, the party announced the suspension of the pilgrimage.
With an eye on next year’s parliamentary vote in Rajasthan, BJP president JP Nadda launched the “Jan Aakrosh Yatra” on December 1 in the Congress-ruled state to bully Ashok Gehlot’s government on issues related to farmers and governance.
“As number of COVID-19 cases rises, BJP suspends Jan Aakrosh Yatra in Rajasthan. For BJP, people come before politics. For us, safety of people, their health is priority The most important thing,” Arun Singh, the national secretary of the BJP, had said in New Delhi.
Hours later, BJP chief Satish Purnia said there was some confusion over the suspension of the pilgrimage, but that public meetings would go ahead.
“Against the tyranny of the Congress government in Rajasthan, the Jan Aakrosh Yatras of the BJP was held from 1st to 14th December. Under this yatra, we reached 20 million people directly and indirectly,” he said.
“So far, Jan Aakrosh sabhas have been organized in 41 constituencies. There is some confusion as there is no consultation from central and state governments, confusion is about suspending yatras but our public meetings will be held,” he said in a video statement here .
He said the public meeting would follow Covid protocols and the meeting would continue until there were any recommendations from the central and state governments.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday cautioned against complacency and directed officials to step up ongoing surveillance measures, especially at international airports, amid a spike in coronavirus cases in some parts of the world.
Earlier in the day, Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya also expressed concern over the rise in COVID-19 cases globally. He asked states to remain vigilant and raise awareness about wearing masks and using hand sanitizer, especially in light of the upcoming holidays and New Year’s celebrations.
In a statement in the Lok Sabha, Mandaviya said the evolving nature of the virus poses a threat to global health, affecting almost every country.
The minister said India reported an average of 153 new cases per day, compared with 587,000 reported cases worldwide every day.
