UP Agra man who returned from China tests positive, quarantines at home

Samples are being collected at Agra airport, railway station and bus terminal, officials said

A 40-year-old man who returned from China two days earlier tested positive for COVID-19 and was quarantined at home, Chief Medical Officer Arun Srivastava said on Sunday.

His sample will be sent to Lucknow for genome sequencing, he said.

“The man has been quarantined at home and the health department team has been asked to test his family and those who had been in contact with him,” Srivastava added.

The man returned to Agra from China via Delhi on December 23 and was subsequently tested at a private laboratory. He added that the report was positive for Covid.

Officials said it was the first positive case of Covid-19 in the area after Nov. 25.

The center has stepped up anti-coronavirus measures as Covid cases surge in some countries, including China.

The center had said it would conduct mandatory RT-PCR testing for passengers from China, Japan, South Korea, Singapore and Thailand, and asked states to conduct mock drills on Dec. 27 to ensure sanitation, including at medical oxygen plants. Facilities are ready.

Meanwhile, the Agra City Health Department started screening and sample collection of foreign visitors to the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and Akbar Mausoleum.

In addition, samples were collected at Agra airport, railway station and International Bus Terminal (ISBT), officials said.

“Sarojani Naidu Medical College, district hospitals and primary and community health centers in rural areas of Agra have started sample collection on a priority basis. Those with symptoms of cold, cough and fever can come to the health centers for Covid testing,” the CMO added.

Srivastava added: “Residents are asked to wear masks and maintain social distance in public places. They are advised to use hand sanitizer and follow Covid guidelines to avoid infection.
