Central Industrial Security Force officers captured a passenger carrying 6.4kg of gold in paste at Mumbai airport today. The gold paste seized was worth about Rs 30 crore.
At around 2 p.m., CISF surveillance intelligence officers at Terminal 2 of CSMI Airport in Mumbai detected suspicious activity by a passenger sitting near the gate rest area on the basis of behavioral detection. He is under electronic and physical surveillance.
“During surveillance, he was observed picking up items from the floor and putting them in his bag,” police said. After putting the items in his bag, he went to a restroom located near the smoking section of the retail area, where he changed and exited, they said.
Out of strong suspicion, the passenger was stopped and questioned by intelligence agents. He was later identified as Sahul Hameed Mohamed Yusuf, who was supposed to fly from Mumbai to Coimbatore on Vistara flight.
“After tactful enquiry, the passenger accepted the presence of pasty gold in a pouch he had received from an international passenger who had thrown the item over the glass plate used to bifurcate the domestic and international gate areas. , handed it to him,” the CISF said in a statement.
Later, Sahul Hameed Mohamed Yusuf was handed over to customs officials along with the yellow metal paste for further action.
