Experts say Russia has the world’s largest nuclear weapons stockpile, with nearly 6,000 warheads.
Kyiv:
Ukraine on Monday called for Russia to be removed from the United Nations, with Moscow, as a permanent member of the Security Council, able to veto any resolution.
“Ukraine calls on member states of the United Nations … to deprive the Russian Federation of its permanent membership in the UN Security Council and exclude it from the entire United Nations,” the foreign ministry said in a statement.
Russia has “illegally occupied the Soviet Union’s seat on the UN Security Council” since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, the statement said.
“From a legal and political point of view, only one conclusion can be drawn: Russia has usurped the Soviet Union’s seat on the UN Security Council,” the ministry added.
“Its three decades of illegal presence at the United Nations have been marked by war and the encroachment of other countries’ territories,” the statement said.
The five permanent members of the 15-seat UN Security Council have veto power over UN resolutions.
