This is the seventh flight to deliver relief supplies under India’s “Operation Dost”.
New Delhi:
On Saturday, India used a C-17 military transport plane to deliver additional life-saving medicine and relief supplies to earthquake victims in Turkey and Syria.
It was the seventh relief flight under India’s “Operation Dost”, an effort to provide aid after a devastating earthquake hit the two countries on Monday, killing more than 20,000 people.
“7th #OperationDost flight to Syria & Turkey. Flight was carrying relief supplies, medical aid, first aid & intensive care medicines, medical equipment & consumables,” tweeted Foreign Minister S Jaishankar.
In the past few days, India has sent five C-17 “Globemaster” military transport planes to Turkey to deliver medicines, mobile hospitals and professional search and rescue teams to support the country’s rescue work.
India has also flown relief supplies to Syria with a C-130J aircraft of the Indian Air Force.
The flight, which departed Saturday night, first flew to the Syrian capital Damascus, where it unloaded relief supplies before heading to Adana, Turkey, officials said.
They said the plane carried more than 35 tons of aid, of which more than 23 tons went to relief efforts in Syria and about 12 tons to Turkey.
The aid to Syria includes relief items such as sleeping mats, generator sets, solar-powered lanterns, tarpaulins, blankets, first-aid and intensive-care medicines and consumables for disaster relief, officials said.
The shipment to Turkey included supplies for Indian Army field hospitals and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams, medical equipment such as electrocardiograms, patient monitors, anesthesia machines, syringe pumps and blood glucose meters.
The shipment also included blankets and other relief items, officials said.
Indian army field hospitals in Turkey have treated several people injured in the quake.
India decided on Monday to immediately send NDRF search and rescue teams, medical teams and relief supplies to Turkey in accordance with Prime Minister Modi’s instructions, and provide Turkey with all possible assistance.
