According to the Department of Prisons, the number of inmates in 60 jails in Maharashtra stood at 41,075 as of January 31, 2023, out of a total capacity of 24,722.
Statistical reports for the period ending December 2021 indicate that prison occupancy rates have been high for many years.

It said 18 of the state’s 60 prisons were operating at double or more than double their Jan. 31, 2023, capacity.
These prisons include Mumbai Central Jail (446 per cent occupancy), Thane Central Jail (389 per cent) and Buldhana District Jail (387 per cent), among others.
Yerawada Central Jail in Pune had the highest number of inmates at 5,966 as of December 31, 2021, followed by Thane Central Jail with 4,471, Mumbai Central Jail with 3,424 and Taloja Jail with 2,819.
The report stated that the prison occupancy rate in the state was 136.19% in 2017, 148.93% in 2018, 152.72% in 2019, 128.70% in 2020 and 148.80 in 2021. In 2021, Maharashtra’s The prison occupancy rate ranks seventh in the country.
In 2021, the average number of inmates in the 60 prisons will be 34,818, of whom 96% are men and 4% are women.
As of January 31, 2023, the number of inmates in all prisons was 41,075, of whom 39,504 were male, 1,556 were female and 15 were transgender. Among them, there were 7,949 criminals, 32,917 were on trial, and 209 were in custody. There are also a total of 606 foreign prisoners in the prison, it said.
The factory industry in prisons earned Rs 1.11 crore and Rs 2.36 lakh through agricultural products during 2021-22.
