Chennai Super Kings eyeing stake in MLB Texas, to be announced soon

The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) may be eyeing a stake in Texas, one of six teams in the Major League Cricket (MLC). The four-time IPL champions on Saturday revealed they will soon make a “big announcement” about their relationship with the new T20 tournament in the United States. The San Francisco Unicorns, Los Angeles, New York, Seattle Orcas, Texas and Washington, D.C. are the six teams participating in the tournament, which is scheduled to begin on July 13 this year.

Derry Capitals, another IPL franchise co-owned by GMR Group, will team up with the Seattle Orcas “to help build and run a world-class cricket team”, the MLC announced on Friday.

Major investors in Seattle Orcas include Microsoft Chairman and CEO Satya Nadella and Madrona Ventures Managing Director Soma Somasegar, among others.

In a cryptic message on social media Saturday, CSK said: “Major announcement coming soon. Hello Texas! Love to our NRI cousin @TeamTexasMLC!” The development happened at the MLC The day before the domestic player draft was scheduled to take place in Houston, more than 100 players were eligible to represent the “American cricket community”.

“The remainder of each team’s roster will be made up of some of the best T20 cricketers from across the globe,” the MLC said in a statement on Friday.

A report from Espncricinfo on March 16 stated that the Kolkata Cavaliers have taken over the Los Angeles franchise, while the Mumbai Indians will run the New York franchise themselves.

The 2023 season will feature 19 games over 18 days until the final on July 30.
